    Hi,

I am using Church theme and have a question regarding customization. Usually when you have a child theme, you copy over any files that you customize from the parent directory to the child directory.

So how do you do it when the changes in are in a parent sub directory file?

You can do the same: copy the file from parent theme. I’d suggest to rename church theme name and folder to your own name to prevent church child theme future update.

I have tried to copy the file over but it didn’t work. This file is not a template file so is it still possible to do it and would I have to also create a folder tree of the same name as the folder tree the file belongs to

Yes, only files in partials folder can be copied to child theme folder. Other that that, you should modify it via hook.

That is what I am trying to do but have not been able to get it to work.

As I am illiterate when it comes to php and I am just helping out our small (25 members) church we can’t afford to pay $25.00 for a plugin to alter the footer on a free (GPL) theme so I will have to continue to do it manually if and when there is an update.

I don’t understand why the footer details are called in via a hooks file instead of a footer file like most other themes are which can easily be altered and placed in the child theme directory and therefore not be overwritten when there is an update to the parent.
